Most people benefit from these rest areas, but Reinhold Metzger, 61, of Point Loma. Metzger, a former U.S. Marine, with a group of British Royal Marines at the end of one of his previous trips along the John Muir Trail. When he asked the Marines how long it took to complete the trip, said that 14 days. He was now determined to beat his record. Not only finish the race in less than 14 days, but 5 days and 10 hours with 3 hours of sleep. Metzger has proven to be the fastest since John Muir’s own backpacking. What a remarkable achievement!
